In 1931, at the age of 23, he received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Yale University, and in 1932 received a scholarship to study at the American Academy in Rome. In the same year, it won the Prix de Rome for architecture. He became the design director of Herman Miller, and demonstrated his savvy by inviting Charles and Ray Eames to join the company. He also released his masterpieces, the platform bench (Nelson bench) and the coconut chair. He created several important furniture designs for Herman Miller.
